While you were out celebrating the coming of the New Year, Planned Parenthood decided to covertly release its annual report for the 2016-2017 FY. So to spare you the time and energy, we read through all the pretty pink and flashy graphics. Then we put together the five big take-aways from our analysis. Here are the important things you should know:
Over one third of all abortions in the U.S. are still done at Planned Parenthood
Yes. They have retained their title as the “Abortion Giant.” According to the report, Planned Parenthood performed 321,384 abortions just last year. That’s about 880 abortions per day. Compared to the previous year, this number has dropped by 6,964. Nevertheless, they’ve continued to maintain their 320,000 abortions-per-year “average,” when looking at the past 10 years. They also remain the nation’s largest, high volume, provider of abortions. Based on recent numbers given by the Guttmacher Institute, Planned Parenthood is accountable for 34.6% of all abortions in the United States last year.
Planned Parenthood clinics have dropped to their lowest number yet
Last year, Planned Parenthood said they had nearly 650 clinics nationwide. Now they claim to have over 600. What’s up?
Just over the course of this past year, Planned Parenthood has been closing clinic doors. According to the “Planned Parenthood Facilities Report” released by the American Life League, the abortion giant has closed 32 of its facilities in 16 states, and opened just five facilities in five states.
In Illinois, there are 17 Planned Parenthood clinics. At the same time, there are 670 other comprehensive care centers located all throughout the state that provide the same services as Planned Parenthood…and then some! (If you want the list, just ask us – we got it!) That means that for every one Planned Parenthood facility in Illinois, there are 39 alternatives.
If any one of these clinics were to close, would that really be such a bad thing?
Contraceptive services and pre-natal services are down
Comparing data from this year and last year, the number of contraceptive services and products Planned Parenthood gave out declined by 106,949. Furthermore, the number of pre-natal services offered dropped 17.5%.
But this is just the little picture – the big picture shows a dramatic drop in non-abortion services all around. It has been reported that over the last five years alone, total services have dropped 13%. Cancer screenings and prevention services have plummeted 41%. This includes a 39% drop in breast exams and a 43% drop in pap tests. Meanwhile, contraceptive services have declined 28%.
At the same time, Planned Parenthood did over 1.6 million abortions in the past five reported years. Last year, prenatal services, miscarriage care, and adoption referrals accounted for only 2.3% of their pregnancy resolution services. The remaining 96% was all abortions. Planned Parenthood talks up the non-abortion services they offer, skipping over the massive amount of abortions they do every day.
Taxpayer funding is still sky-high
$543.7 million dollars (nearly half a billion). That’s how much money was sent from your pockets to the abortion giant, just last year. Now for what it’s worth, we’ll say that is less than the $554.6 million dollars they took from us the year before. But really, what difference does it make? Planned Parenthood is raking in about $1.5 million in taxpayer dollars every day.
Meanwhile, recent polling shows that a majority of Americans do not want their tax dollars going to fund abortions. Planned Parenthood is also under federal investigation by the Department of Justice for the harvest and sale of body parts from aborted babies. Should an organization like this really be receiving a paycheck from the government?
They say they are non-profit…but they made a profit
So, it turns out that this last year Planned Parenthood brought in over $1.4 billion dollars in revenue. That’s about $100 million more than last year. The report also shows that $98.5 million dollars of this lump sum was excess revenue – left over money after all expenses had been taken care of. Profit.
So much for being non-profit.
It’s interesting to point out that Planned Parenthood mentions they gained 700,000 new donors. If that be the case, and they are making more money than necessary, why should they still be taking money from you?
